Payroll giving
Payroll giving (also known as Give As You Earn or GAYE) is a highly efficient way to support NSE. If you earn a salary or if your occupational pension is paid through PAYE then you could make regular contributions to NSE through a payroll giving scheme. Or perhaps you own or manage a business and would like to offer your employees the opportunity to support NSE by setting up a GAYE scheme.
Payroll giving allows people to make tax free donations to NSE on a regular basis through their employer (or pension provider). If you sign up to a payroll giving scheme, a donation will be deducted from your salary (or pension) before tax. So every £1 you give will only cost you 78p and the tax savings are even greater for higher rate tax payers. Some employers also offer ‘matched giving’ schemes where they match or double a donation at no extra cost to the employee.
How do I start payroll giving?
You can donate to NSE by authorising your employer or pension provider to make payments from your salary or pension payments.
For employees the first thing to do is to check with your payroll department whether your company offers a payroll giving scheme. If they do not you can ask them to set up a scheme and there are details of how to do this on the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) website (opens in a new window).
If your employer is already set up, you will be able to sign up with a payroll giving agency who will transmit the donations on your behalf. To start giving you will need to fill out one simple application form, stating how much they would like to give and the details of NSE. The system is extremely easy and flexible - you decide how much you would like to give each pay day and it’s simple to make changes to how or when you give.
If your company does not currently offer such a scheme then you may wish to sign up online with one of our payroll giving partners.
What are the benefits to NSE?
Generating regular income from payroll giving supporters enables us to plan and budget NSE projects into the future. Donations are deducted before tax is calculated, making it one of the most tax efficient ways of donating to us.
What are the benefits to employers?
For employers the scheme is quick and easy to set-up and administer. It also:
- helps motivate employees by supporting a worthy cause
- generates a positive view of the organization amongst employees
- gives your company a positive reputation for corporate social responsibility.
The launch of the Payroll Giving Quality Mark in January 2006, recognises and rewards organisations for making Payroll Giving available to their staff. The Quality Mark comprises a certificate and logo, as well as Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
