Australian patient receives pioneering epilepsy warning system

In a world first, Australian doctors have attached probes designed to predict seizures into the brain of a man with severe epilepsy. The new technology is intended to warn epilepsy patients of impending seizures.

NSE comment:
"It is the unpredictability of seizures that is one of the most debilitating aspects of epilepsy. A device that can give a reliable warning, and without false alarms would be an important step towards managing the condition.

"It would be even more helpful to link the detection device with a method to prevent the seizure from becoming established: such as an electrical stimulation or injection of a drug."
