Hi everyone

I am constantly trying to lose weight but with little success. So I thought I'll go to weight watchers I know that works. I have measured everything, counted points and stuck to it. The 1st week I gained half a pound  the 2nd week I gained another 1lb  The organiser said I must be doing something wrong but she checked my book and I had listed everything in minute detail and what did she discover.......I was doing everything correctly

Have visited my neuro today and on telling him he said "well your body never does what it's expected to" cheek :!:
Then he suggested I might try this new 'fasting diet'. He says it's not a fad it's been scientifically proved. So beginning Thursday I'll have a go. So I'll keep you informed.

It's our silver wedding anniversary in October and we're having a blessing in our church followed by a party. I would really like to be a couple of sizes smaller by then so I'll try anything

I have heard women at work talk about the fasting diet. Isn't that where you don't eat for 2 days out of the 7?

I think the fasting diet is where you have no more than 500 calories 2 days (but not 2 consecutive days) a week if you're a woman and it's a about 200 cals more for a man.

It shouldn't do you any harm as long as you've not got diabetis or anything. I went on a 1,000 calorie a day diet for 15 months but some days only ate about 800 cals. It didn't do me any harm and lost 8 stone. Kept it off now for 6 years and I eat about 1,800 - 2,000 cals a day now with the odd treat. I don't do really vigorous exercise, just walking and gardening and the usual in housework. Never went to the gym or anything.

We're all different and I had to virtually strave before I lost weight and even now, a couple of days of 'normal' eating and 2 pounds go on.

Emms has got it right. 500 calories a day on 2 non-consecutive days.

First day will be tomorrow  I'll let you know how it goes.

Good luck Dewi.

500 calories a day is practically nothing so you'll be hungry, but it should work. I can't remember a day I didn't feel hungry at some most of the time when I was dieting and I did 1,000 cals a day (sometimes less).

When you first start a diet, you often lose a lot of weight quickly cos your body gets rid of fluid, but then you might slow down quite a lot, even with the fasting diet, cos your body thinks you're startving and therefore, slows your metabolism down to stop you starving to death. Our brains don't know we're overweight

Well I've had my 500 calories. I'm hungry but that's only natural. But I've just got to remember that tomorrow I'll be able to eat properly again.
Apparently the first 3 weeks are tough but then you get used to it.
Well I am determined to lose weight whatever happens.

I wouldn't mind so much if I ate large meals but everyone says I eat like a sparrow. I've been told that's half the problem that I'm not eating enough but I've been told so many things I don't know what to believe

Roll on bedtime

What have you had today then that totals 500 calories?

I'm intrigued as I have no idea what calories are in what food types etc :D

An example of 500 calories.

I slice of wholemeal toast with low sugar marmalaide (no butter or margarine) 120 cals.

I medium apple, 50 cals

I coffee, no sugar and with semi skimmed milk, 20 cals.

2 slices of cooked chicken breast with small mixed salad or hot with cabbage, carrots or cauliflower, around 280 cals.

1 Muller light yoghurt 100 cals.

That's over 500 cals but is around what you could have. You could use fully skimmed milk or could leave out the marmalaide or swap the toast for an apple or orange or 2 satsumas. You can fill up on veg cos most green veg is low in cals but watch the fruit cos it full of sugar. Ever tried raw mushrooms? Theyr'e great in salad I think and hardly any cals, same as cellery and cucumber. The rest of your drinks would have to be either water or black coffee or tea which is classed as 0 cals or zero cal soft drinks. Low calorie soups are supposed to be good but they don't fill me up, neither do the low calorie shakes.

I had porridge made with water (83 cals)
Muller light yoghurt (99 cals)
black tea (0)
Poach egg on toast (74 +60 cals)
M&S mini-chocolate hot cross bun (90cals)
semi-skimmed milk 60ml (30 cals)
then had 1/2 choc bun (45 cals)

Total 481 cals

I was really hungry but no effects on my e.

Think I'll try your menu next week, sounds much better than mine
I love mushrooms, actually eat them like an apple mmm
My problem is there is very little fruit or veg that I like, although I am filling my plate with veg to fill me up.

Will keep you informed and if anyone has any menu suggestions then please let me know.

Thanks

Dewi

It didn't affect my e either Dewi, going without food doesn't seem to bother it.

I did plenty of walking too when I was dieting and still try to do it along with some gardening, but don't do the gym. Shame you don't like fruit, I like just about everything

Julie, it's a pity you have that food allergy problem, same with those who have diabetis, you can't do the fasting thing so I'm lucky I don't have those problems. Ah well. One thing that DOES work for me is drinking a pint of water or low sugar squash just before a meal, it helps fill you up.

Virtually everything we do burns up calories. They say even light housework is good for using up calories. Even working mentally burns them up, but not so quickly. That's what my GP told me anyway.

I certainly don't power walk, it was mainly dog walking but now we've lost the dog I still do about a mile or so a few times a week. My arthritis plays up sometimes and I can't do that much but it all helps. Even just standing lifting a broom up and down above your head for 5 mins is exercise.
