Publicising your event
Making people aware of your activity is the most important part of being a fundraiser. If you can draw in the crowds it will be much easier to make your event financially successful. Here are a few tips:
Make the headlines
The local press and radio thrive on local stories. If you can give them an article with a local angle they are likely to give you great coverage.
If you are preparing a press release be sure to include all the important details (use Who, What, When, Why, Where as a check). Download our sample press release (MS Word) for more ideas on writing a press release.
If you want to use facts and figures to back up your story check them out with the information on this website
Once you have sent your press release, you may find it helpful to follow it up with a phone call after a couple of days. At this stage you may also be able to arrange for a photographer to visit and take a picture for pre-event publicity
Many papers and radio shows have a free 'What’s On' guide
Spread the word
There are many ways to tell people about what you are planning to do:
Put up posters in prominent locations wherever you can (it is important to ask permission from the person in charge of the location before putting up your publicity material). Ideas for locations include: community centres, notice boards, town hall, local venues, pubs, care homes, milkman, schools, libraries, youth clubs, local shops, local papers/radio, newspaper delivery, community television station and churches.
Flyers - give them as a reminder of the details. You may also be able to leave them on shop counters, on tables in restaurants and other public place.
Word of mouth is often best. Few can resist a personal invitation.
We can also help you with your publicity. All we need is the important information - times, dates, venue etc and ideally a human interest story. Please give us at least two months notice before the date of the event.
