Winchester choirboy awarded epilepsy champion accolade
Winchester choirboy, Luke Berry is the Epilepsy Society (formerly The National Society for Epilepsy or 'NSE') first ever epilepsy champion.
When the 12-year-old, who lives in Brockenhurst, but boards at Winchester College, underwent five days of EEG-videotelemetry to investigate his seizures, he jumped at the opportunity to raise awareness of epilepsy.
On Thursday 8 July at 11.45am he will be presented with a special certificate by Trevor Hutton, Epilepsy Society's regional manager for the Winchester area, who will hand over the award in Winchester College Chapel after the end of term service.
Twelve year-old Luke was singled out to be the first recipient of the Epilepsy Society's new award scheme, which recognises contributions in the field of epilepsy, after persuading Radio Solent and BBC South Today to follow and document his story to increase people’s understanding of epilepsy.
Luke has also been filmed for BBC South Today’s Inside Out Programme and he’s hoping to record a CD to raise money for epilepsy.
Trevor said: “He really is amazing, not only is he a talented choirboy, but Luke is so articulate and interesting when talking about epilepsy. He’s a true champion in our eyes - we are delighted to give him this award which recognises people who go the extra mile to help break down barriers and raise awareness of a condition which affects 456,000 people in the UK”
