Queen Elizabeth House residents

David's story

‘When I first brought David to live in Queen Elizabeth House everyone thought he was a little old person,' says his mum, Edna. 'He was slumped in his wheelchair, drugged up on so many medications that he could barely raise his head or communicate. He was only just in his 40s but he looked like an old man.

‘My older son Andrew had always helped me to look after David but he died of cancer at the age of 44 and I lost my husband. I just got to the point where I could no longer cope.

‘As soon as David came to Queen Elizabeth House he just blossomed. His medication was sorted out so that he is now on drugs that work for him and allow him to be himself. Best of all he is leading a normal life with friends and activities, personal goals and just fantastic staff to look after him. He plays pool and dominoes, follows his football team Leeds United, and has lots of opportunities to join in other activities.

‘It would be daft to worry about David at Queen Elizabeth House. Of course I miss him but he is leading the sort of independent life that at one time I could only ever have dreamt of for him. I really wish his brother Andrew was alive to see him so happy and enjoying himself.’

Richard's story

Richard, 33, moved to Queen Elizabeth House five years ago. He experiences many seizures a day and has complex epilepsy.

He likes to keep himself busy and one of his activities is collecting internal mail for the house. He regularly visits  the onsite Chalfont Shop and local community shops.

Richard is supported in helping to cook for other residents. He also likes to read to friends and share his range of fast-car DVDs with them.

Richard enjoys travel. He has been to Ireland on holiday and recently travelled to Poland for a five-day trip with a support worker and full-time nurse. He has also been to Birmingham with staff for his sister’s wedding.
