Anti-malarial drug information for people with epilepsy

As singer Cheryl Cole recovers from malaria, NSE offers guidance on how to protect yourself from malaria when you have epilepsy.

NSE medical director, Professor John Duncan said:  “Drugs recommended for people with epilepsy include Proguanil (Paludrine), Malarone and Doxycycline (Vibramycin) depending on the country or area you are visiting.

“People with epilepsy are advised to avoid the anti-malarial medications Chloroquine and Larium as these can cause seizures in some people.  Insect repellents containing the chemical DEET are safe to use.”
