Sodium valproate update

Sodium valproate may be related to metabolic syndrome leading to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, according to research presented at Congress today.

The research, undertaken in the Netherlands, involved a study of 138 patients with refractory epilepsy taking more than one anti-epileptic drug which also included sodium valproate.

Martin Brodie, director of the Epilepsy Unit at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, also pointed out that research indicates high doses of valproic acid during pregnancy may result in a lower IQ later in life for the unborn child.
