Schools awareness programme

Schools awareness programme

This programme is designed specifically for 12/13 year olds but we will provide a tailor made programme for any age group on request.

Schools awareness programme for year 8

This specific programme has been designed for pupils working towards Key Stage 3 in Year 8. It allows classes to gain a greater understanding of living with a condition like epilepsy, and also refers to more general aspects of living with a long term condition and society’s attitudes and perceptions.

Why focus on epilepsy?

Even today in the UK, 2% of the population still believe that epilepsy is caused by demonic possession. Incredibly, a further 2% think it is contagious. It is a condition which is, at best, widely misunderstood and rarely talked about.

How young people with epilepsy cope with the condition may depend on how they are treated by their peers, at a time when being different is difficult to deal with. They may fall victim to bullying or become withdrawn and socially isolated.

In most schools there will be one or more children who have the condition and quite likely a member of staff too.

These programmes give today’s young people a chance to consider how they can make a difference. Increased knowledge will undoubtedly reduce stigma and improve the lives of people with epilepsy.

A typical programme will consist of:

Introduction and whole class discussion

Introduction to epilepsy.

Film and whole class discussion

Film footage of different types of epilepsy followed by a discussion including appropriate first aid.

Group activity

Typically six groups each with a spokesperson and a note-taker. Scenarios on three different topics are given to the class and pupils are asked to discuss their thoughts and ideas within their group.

Plenary

These scenarios are then opened out to a class discussion led by the presenter.

Your response would be greatly appreciated as we are looking for ways to improve the programme so that it meets the needs of pupils and teachers as well as helping to raise awareness of epilepsy.
