Brain donation for research into epilepsy

By Professor Sanjay Sisodiya and Dr Maria Thom

Advances in scanning techniques mean we are now able to look deeper into the brain than ever before giving us a unique insight into the impact of seizures and their possible causes. Alongside this we are fortunate that many people who undergo epilepsy surgery allow us to study the brain tissue that is removed and this is invaluable for our investigations.

However, it is by examining whole brain tissue, taken from a brain donation after a person’s death, that we can really advance our understanding of the causes of epilepsy and the way that individuals respond to different medication. We are always grateful when people generously choose to offer donation of  their brain for research into epilepsy.

You can find out more about brain donation for research here.

Professor Sanjay Sisodiya is a consultant neurologist at Epilepsy Society and leads on genetic research into epilepsy.

Dr Maria Thom is neuropathologist and senior lecturer at the Institute of Neurology, University College London.
