Buccolam 10mg temporarily unavailable

Viropharma has advised that Buccolam 10mg strength is temporarily unavailable.  The epilepsy emergency medication is expected to be out of stock in the UK for up to two weeks but it is hoped that normal availability will resume from the week ending 14 November. All other dosage strengths - 2.5mg, 5mg and 7.5mg - are available as usual.

Patients and carers who are unable to obtain their usual supply of Buccolam are advised to consult their healthcare professional should they require advice on, or a prescription for, an alternative emergency medication.

Information for healthcare professionals

ViroPharma recommends that no new patients are prescribed Buccolam 10mg until stocks are once more available. Physicians and epilepsy specialist nurses should discuss potential alternative emergency medication options with their patients. Pharmacists should contact their wholesalers for up to date information on Buccolam availability.

Buccolam is an emergency medication for use in children with epilepsy from three months up to the age of 18 years, to treat prolonged, acute, convulsive seizures. The current unavailability of stocks has arisen due to multiple factors, primarily a temporary issue with Buccolam production.
