Della fundraises for the sister she lost on Christmas Day

Della Mead was just three years old when her older sister Laura died on Christmas Day after having multiple seizures.

Della's mum, Nicola found Laura unconscious in her bed at around 11pm on Christmas Day ten years ago. Laura was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead before midnight with the cause of death being given as respiratory failure caused by her epilepsy.

This time of year is always painful for Della, now 12, her mum, Nicola and sister Tara, 21.

Facebook fundraising page

But this year, Della decided to surprise her mum by setting up a fundraising page on Facebook, to mark ten years since her sister died at the age of 16.

Della told the Croydon Advertiser: "I got the idea when I was scrolling through Facebook and it asked if I would like to set up a fundraiser for my birthday on December 4.

"When it asked what charity I'd like to donate to, I thought of my sister so I typed in 'epilepsy' and found the Epilepsy Society.

"Seeing people have already donated makes me happy because it means that people still really care about my sister."

Lovely surprise

Nicola said she was 'super-proud' of her youngest daughter for setting up the online fundraising page.

The mum-of-three, now 51, said: "Della's such a good girl and this was such a lovely surprise.

"She hadn't said a word to me about it before - I only found out when she tagged me on Facebook when she came home from Sea Cadets."

"I find it quite difficult to do fundraising work myself because it just brings back sad memories.

Laura's memory

"They say time heals but there are days when it really hurts still - Laura's memory is always going to be there.

"With the anniversary being Christmas Day, there is no getting away from it and on December 25, it's always difficult for me and Della by the end of the day."

Della's fundraising page brought in twice as many donations as Della's £150 target, raising £355. With a further donation of £100 and £250 from a bake sale at her school, Della raised over £700. Her fundraising page is now closed, but Della and her mum have said that if anyone would still like to donate, they should do so through Epilepsy Society's Christmas Wishes Appeal inspired by 10-year-old Ellie who lost her friend Patrick to epilepsy.

If you would like to make a donation you can do so here.
