Illuminating the Self: an art installation by Susan Aldworth

Artist Susan Aldworth is looking for 100 people living with epilepsy, including their carers, to write personal testimonies about living with the condition for an art exhibition Illuminating the Self which will explore the experience of living with epilepsy from many different perspectives.

These unique testimonies will be embroidered onto 100 items of white clothing by volunteers including members of the public and students from The Royal School of Needlework.  The 100 embroidered items will be hung from the gallery ceiling and programmed to move in neural patterns and pathways associated with epilepsy.

The installation will be shown at the Hatton Gallery in Newcastle in January 2020 as part of the exhibition Illuminating the Self which is funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Can you help?

Would you like to participate in the project by either sharing your thoughts or by doing some embroidery? Here are some questions which might help to start you writing:

1. How would you describe what epilepsy means to you?

2. How would you describe how you feel after an epileptic episode?

3. Are there any positive words you would use to describe your epilepsy?

4. Would you like to write anything else about your experience of epilepsy?
