why leave a gift to us in your will

Every year people  choose  to remember Epilepsy Society in their wills. Please consider supporting our work in this very special way. A gift, no matter how large or small has the power to make a difference. Your legacy will help us to realise our vision of a full life for everyone affected by epilepsy.

Legacies are vital funds

Looking through a microscopeSo much of what we do is made possible through gifts in wills. About 15% of our income comes from legacies. By including a gift in your will for Epilepsy Society you will provide us with vital income needed to continue our work to help improve the lives of people with epilepsy. We ask that any gifts which are left to us are unrestricted, that way we can direct them where the need is greatest.

Our latest annual review shows what we are doing now to make a difference to the lives of people with epilepsy.

We have been working for over 120 years, read more about our history and what we do now to support people with epilepsy.

Inheritance tax rules

Inheritance tax is payable on your estate after your death if your estate goes over the inheritance tax threshold which currently stands at £325,000. Anything above this amount is therefore subject to tax, currently at 40%.

In 2012 the government brought in a new inheritance tax incentive designed to encourage more people to leave a legacy to charity in their will. It means that when someone leaves 10% or more of their net estate (after certain deductions) to charity, the inheritance tax rate that will apply to the rest of the estate will be reduced from 40% to 36%.

Gifts to charity are exempt from inheritance tax. So leaving a gift to Epilepsy Society can also be used to reduce your inheritance tax bill, meaning that you can distribute your estate to charity and to loved ones in the most tax efficient way.

Inheritance tax can be complicated, your solicitor should be able to advise on inheritance tax planning. Read more about inheritance tax including the basics and the how the tax paid and when:

Donations in memory

Making and updating your will are also good opportunities to think about funeral arrangements . Please consider asking for donations in memory to Epilepsy Society rather than flowers  at your funeral.
