Annamaria is head of the Laboratory of Experimental Neurology, Department of Neuroscience at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milano.

"The main research focus of my studies is on molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of seizures and epileptogenesis in acquired epilepsies, with special interest in developing new disease-modifying treatments and biomarkers. I was associate Editor of Basic Science for Epilepsia for 8 years, and appointed of the Chair of the Commission on Neurobiology of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE, 2005-2009) for promoting translational research in epilepsy. I was member of the Commission on European Affairs (2013-2017) of ILAE to promote educational initiatives for clinicians and basic scientists. I am serving in several editorial boards of scientific journals and for American Epilepsy Society (AES) committees. I  received the Research Recognition Award for translational research in 2009 by the AES. I have been recently appointed as Chair of the Research Sustainability task Force of the Climate change ILAE Commission.

My interest in climate change and epilepsy arises from my preclinical research background using experimental models of epilepsy. It is well known that hyperthermia induced in animal models may precipitate seizures and exacerbate epileptic activity by decreasing seizure threshold. Moreover, temperature changes may affect neuronal function and excitability.  Seasonal influences are also reported in seizure manifestation and their response to anti-seizure medications. EpiCC is an ideal platform to merge preclinical and clinical evidence and complementary expertise for a better understanding of the potential impact of climate changes on the persons with epilepsy, and for promoting further research in the field."
